Camera soon....

I've been told that my camera is now working, it's been fixed and I should have it by Wednesday! I can't wait!

Now I have to replace my stylus which Zoe broke, so I can still photoshop up my pics.

Mouse in the House

So the kids dropped an almost empty pack of tutti fruitti cereal on the floor today. Some of the powdery sugary stuff fell on the floor.

I was in the livingroom on the couch with Zoe while she napped in my arms. Then I decided I couldn't stand the mess that was developing around me so I encouraged Zoe to wake up then set her down to play while I started picking up toys and putting them in the basket.

I saw a toy that was unfamiliar to me and reached out to put it away, when I realised it was making breathing movements. It wasn't a toy after all. It was a mouse!

The poor thing was sitting right beside the bag of cereal and was hardly moving. I guess it was sick, or ate too much sugar? I have no idea. But it certainly didn't look right. :( I got a one of our catch and release mouse traps and put some peanut butter in to encourage him to get inside. He sniffed around it a bit but then didn't go in.

Eventually I gently brushed him into the mouse trap and set a square of cloth with water in it, and Rene's coming home to release him in the park. I don't think he's going to make it though :( He looks very sick. I'm not sure if I did the right thing or not. I had no idea what to do. These things freak me out so bad. I don't want him to die though.

Not a fun ordeal at all (although the kids seemed to think it was)

Passport pic

I'm kind of depressed that my passport is about to expire soon, and I won't be able to see my picture in it anymore! This was taken when I was 17, and much prettier! Now when I get it renewed I'll have to be reminded of how very badly I've aged in 10 years. Ugh.

The business of being born

I've been interested in checking out this movie since seeing the trailor for it

http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com/

I was happy to discover the Nebraska Friends of Midwives is cosponsoring a free screening at the Ross in Lincoln on February 25 at 7 pm. It will be followed by a panel discussion. I'm very much looking forward to attending.

I'm very interested in natural birthing. I've been on pitocin with all 4 of my labors, and it sucked. I did labor with Lana using only gas and air for pain relief, and I used no pain relief with Zoe. Zoe's was a very quiet, sweet peaceful birth, in a small town hospital. Rene delivered her, while the midwife watched and gave instructions. He placed her on my tummy then cut the chord. A very powerful and empowering experience.

I understand that there is absoluetly a time and a place for medical intervention, but I do wish women were given more of a chance to figure out what we're capable of on our own before all the needles and machines etc come out by default.

Killer Bunnies

Rene brought this card game home one day from his buddy at work. They've been playing it together at lunch times. I thought it seemed really weird and wasn't very interested.
But after playing it a couple of times, it's really addictive! Loads of fun. A nice aggression release.
We've had friends over to play and tonight we're having some more people over for a little Killer Bunnies party. I totally recommend it.

Protein Brownies

With Lana and I being vegetarian now, I'm always looking for ways to get extra protein in our diet. I remembered this recipe I used to have for brownies made using pureed kidney beans, and found a similar one online.

Bean Brownies

1 cup cooked Romano or kidney beans, pureed

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Spray bottom of 13- x 9-inch (3.5L) baking pan with nonstick coating. In mixing bowl, combine beans, sugar, flour, cocoa and salt.

Add oil, eggs and vanilla. Beat on low speed or by hand, scraping down sides of bowl, until smooth. Stir in walnuts if using. Pour batter into prepared pan; spread into corners and smooth top.

Melt chocolate chips in microwave, 15 seconds at a time, stirring well in between. Pour into a small sandwich bag, cut a hole in the bottom and pipe on top of the browny batter.

Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 30 minutes or until tester inserted into centre comes out clean.Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into squares.

They're so moist and delicious. Have one as a snack with a glass of milk and you've got your 2 protein sources and all amino acids. Nutricious, indulgent, scrummy treat.

We also made some flap jacks today since Kaya doesn't like chocolate. They came out delicious too! Raisins, oatmeal, a small amount of flour, couple tbsps brown sugar or molasses, honey and non-hydrogenated vegan spread. Oven at 350 for about 15-20 mins. Kaya adores these. You can crumble some up and serve it on yogurt too.

4 minutes

That's how long I managed wihtout interrupting. Not because I couldn't help myself, by he didn't know what to do with all that airtime and he eventually just stopped talking.

I asked him about how he was feeling about his job. Usually a subject that gets him going. He talked for 4 minutes then just said "thank you for asking".

I should take time just to listen more often.

Zoe Babbles

She's such a chatterbox.

Oh and by the way all the mess behind her was her doing, she just tore everything out of a box and threw it all around.

new webcam

We got a new webcam, so if anyone wants to do a web cam skype or IM thing lemme know and I'll give you my info.

We've been having fun playing with it.

Silly Saturday Challenge

OK I'm going to try to do one of these every week. (I came up with this ingenious idea while lying in bed at 4 am with insomnia). I'll challenge myself do so something random or silly on Saturday, then I'll post later to say how I got on.

Feel free to join in (unless of course, you have dignity) and post a comment about it. That would be fun.

Ok so today's Silly Saturday Challenge is to listen to someone (probably my husband) talk for as long as I can without interrupting. I'm going to time it. I'm allowed to say "mmmhmmm" or "yeah" etc. Maybe I'll have to bring up a subject he's passionate about (like donuts). I'm not allowed to tell him what I'm doing (he never reads this).

This will be hard for me cause I always interrupt. I'm terrible for it.
Wish me luck.

Brand names

You know those words that you end up using to identify an object based on the leading brands name?

Here are a few that I was shocked to find they don't use here in the USA

Blue Tac.
I guess they just call it poster putty here, or something.

Sellotape
I don't even think they call it "sticky tape" in true Blue Peter style either. I guess it's just "tape"

Of course there's the hoover thing, which is just a vaccum here. You don't do the hoovering here, you do the vacuming,

They don't know what cling film is here. They call it seran wrap

This stuff just blows my mind.

Happy 50th Birthday Mum!

It's my mum's 50th today. She may be half a century old, but she's still as youthful as ever at heart. She's the best mum and an awesome Granny. We're so thankful for her.

Beauty

Baby Talk

At breakfast this morning, Zoe was in her high chair. She kept pointing at various dry cereals and requesting them with babble.

When her tray was sufficently full of a nice variety of cereal, she made a tarzan-like noise, took her hands and went wild brushing every last piece of cereal off her tray and onto the floor.

When her work was complete, she looked up in appeal to me, eyebrows folded pleadingly and very clearly, full of intonation, said,

"as cha saa daaat saa aba chat"

I have no idea what she meant but she won me over and I had to smile. She was pleased.

SIMAS part 2

This is very near the top of the list of stuff I miss about Scotland.

I HATE grocery shopping. It's such a task. I hate walking all around the store, forgetting something and having to walk about half a mile to get back to the aisle at the other side of the store, and especially the waiting in line for ever to pay. It takes up a whole evening which would be much better spent doing....well pretty much anything else!
Back in Scotland, we'd go to tesco if we felt like we wanted to. Otherwise I just had to click, add items to my list, virtual check out, all while sitting down. Someone else would pack it and deliver it to my door. I didn't realise at the time what a luxury it was.
