Hmmm I never thought of it that way..

We practically spent the weekend in Lowes. It's like there's a warp in the space time continuum when you get in that place. You walk in, lose consciousness a bit, and when you walk back out you find that hours passed and your bank account is mysteriously depleted and you're in a terrible mood. There's some voodoo or something involved, I'm sure of it.

Plus, the place is so darned big. If you remember that you forgot a plank of wood when you're in the garden section, you have to walk about a mile to get back to the lumber, and that takes time.

Then there's all the time spent breaking up fights from amongst your offspring, and time looking all over for your hyperactive almost 4 year old who is hiding behind the display tumble driers and then inside the kitchen cabinets then trying to climb up the huge shelves loaded with heavy metal to reach the birds that built there nest there. And then factor in the time spent hiding the expensive basins the aforementioned daughter knocked off their display cases and almost smashed and then trying to get the kids to all walk away with us, looking casual and innocent. And then there's the multiple superhero moments of swooping down just in time to stop your 2 year old from his repeated Houdini escapes from the shopping cart seatbelt and attempts to dive to the ground from his high height. And of course, each child has to visit the bathroom, but none of them at the same time. So you finally get back to the aisle with the hinges just in time for another child's bladder to spontaneously fill to capacity when it was entirely empty 5 minutes ago when their sibling went. All of this adds up to cause the shopping trip to turn into an epic expedition, all for a couple of tools and pieces of wood.

We were all rather grumpy and hungry and fed up of the whole experience, so when Kaya noticed my exasperation with the kids' unruliness she offered me an explanation.
"It's just that, when you take us somewhere fun like the zoo or museum, you always tell us that if we behave really well while we're there, you'll want to take us back again sometime. And that if we fight and whine a lot it makes you not want to take us back again. Well...we really don't want you to take us back here again."

I had a bit of a slapping-myself-on-the-head-Homer-Simpson-style moment.

And the worst part is, we came home and realized there's a bunch of stuff we forgot to get. So guess what we're doing next weekend.....yup, we're shopping again

It's been a while - ikaya birthday special

August 12 2002 I gave birth to Kaya Dawn, and like the dawn she brought the sunshine with her after our long, dark night. A new era began and I am so thankful for every precious moment, even the ones that turned my hair grey and took chunks of my sanity. She's an awesome little girl and I'm very proud of her.

To celebrate her turning 8 years old, we've revived iKaya. Here's her birthday special episode. Special thanks to Uncle Doug for battling with software problems and video formatting issues to put this together.

Warning...not great for any of you vegans to watch. I'm serious. There's a bit of a...tragic impromptu segment in this that does make me grieve a little...

Take it away Kaya.

Marital Unfaithfulness

Daddy took Kaya to the store, they had some Daddy-daughter time. A conversation about marriage developed and Daddy explained how a husband and wife promise to love each other, exclusively for the rest of their lives.

Kaya pondered it for a moment, and then asked, "So they are *only* supposed to love each other? No body else?"

"Well," he clarified, "we are supposed to love everybody. We love God, we love you kids, we love our friends and family, we're even supposed to love our enemies. But we have a special kind of love that we save for just each other."

Kaya looked down heartened. Her face grimaced, displaying the inner turmoil as she decided whether or not she should say what she ultimately decided she had to. "Dad, I have to tell you something important. Mummy is in love with another man."

"What? What do you mean?"

"Well, I don't know what his name is, but I know Mummy is really in love with him. In the way that she loves you. He plays guitar and she listens to his music really loud in the house."

Rene felt instantly relieved. "Oh, you mean Nuno Bettencourt? Yeah, she'll never love me as much as him. I accepted that a long time ago."

I'm not sure what lesson Kaya will learn from that encounter...

Hey, I was in love with Nuno since I was like 12, and my Dad took me to an Extreme concert. I wasn't interested in boys before that point. But, I mean, look at him!

And check him out in action

here he is just talking and being yummy

I rest my case.

But ya know what? Gosh darn it, this guy still wins my heart beat every time.

Hubba hubba. You're better than Nuno any day, babe. <3

We discovered something amazing!

We have been provoked to look up Kaya's ancestry recently. As it turns out, on her paternal grandparent side, going quite far back, there is some alien genealogy. It took a lot of heavy research but it appears that her Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandmother, a farmer in Ireland, was abducted one day and came back looking 9 months pregnant. The baby boy was born without complication but he was...let's say...a little different. They blamed it on a bad batch of potatoes she had eaten the day before she turned up 9 months pregnant, but secretly folks new there was something else going on.

Well, her Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandaddy was raised in seclusion and learned to hide his....differences. When he was fully grown he had control of his powers and could look completely normal (until he got angry, and he made a public spectacle once or twice at the market). He married and had 3 boys and 2 girls. There are rumors of some minor attributes showing up in his children and grandchildren at about age 7, but it seemed as though it all filtered out and there wasn't much left from the little green man lineage.

Until yesterday. It started out as a normal day. Nothing particularly unusual about Kaya. She ate her breakfast as normal and was ready to play.

A little while later, I noticed her skin looked an off color. I asked if she was feeling ok, she said she felt a bit weird, she had no fever, but her voice sounded shrill.

I was contemplating taking her to the Dr when things took a turn for the worse....
Her eyes started glowing red, she grew some bumps out of her head.

Now I've seen ET, and cried at it even in adulthood. I know enough to know better than to call the doc or notify any authorities. They would take her away an do tests on her. I would hate for that to happen...because...

even though she has developed some serious outer space attitude..

...we think she looks pretty cute.

We love our little alien girl. I'm curious to see if it will happen to our other kids or not.

Playful Parenting

I have a lot I want to say on this subject at some point in the future. But I'll make this one a quickie.

Sometimes we go into parenting situations full guns blazing, only to accidentally shoot ourselves in the foot with said fully blazing gun. Sometimes we expect conflict, so we start reacting as though there already is a conflict, and thus we bring one about.

I just did something similar. 2 minutes ago. And it could have ended in disaster. I went through to the livingroom to see that the kids had torn an egg carton into many pieces and spilled it on the floor (an "art project") and then emptied the contents of a box of penny pasta all over the floor and couch. And thrown in some pistachios to boot.

I handled it calmly, walked through and switched off the tv and informed the children they could watch a little bit more as soon as they've cleaned up the mess. Kaya went straight through and started cleaning. She's a rule sort of person. She likes to know where boundaries are and to stay inside them.

Lana, however, is more of a beat-of-your-own drum type and prefers to govern her own world. Fine, I'm the same was as her, I get that and love her for it. However, she does have to learn how to live in a society and get along with others and contribute equally.

I heard her switch the tv back on while Kaya was working her butt off cleaning up. So I loaded up my weapons and went in, "NO Lana, you can't watch tv! You'll be banned from tv for 2 days if you don't get in there and help your sister now. It's only fair, you helped make the mess!!" yell yell, bla bla. It only puts her off. I turned off the tv and sent her through. Her head was hanging low. She didn't seem like she had a lot of energy or ambition to start helping, and I anticipated she'd probably just flop herself down on the couch.

As Jasmine Star says - "because all posts are better with a pic"

But then Kaya piped in with, "Hey Lana, do you want to feed the hungry vacuum?"

Lana's face lit up. And she got to work picking up pieces and feeding them to the vacuum cleaner. And they're still both in there just now busy cleaning away and having a great time.

If only I had thought of that! So often if we just approach an issue from a playful point of view, we'll have a much easier time getting our kids to participate. Instead of saying, "put your shoes on NOW we're 5 minutes late!", why not try saying, "let's pretend our feet are 2 birds who have lost their feathers, and they're really cold. Let's pretend these shoes are the feathers, we'd better put them on really fast before the bird gets cold". Or instead of saying, "Brush. Teeth. Nowish" how about, "I found a magical toothbrush. If you rub it against your teeth 30 times on the top and bottom, a fairy comes out and grants a wish. Would you like to go try it!"

Kids really respond to it! I might think about making a challenge or something, because I certainly need to remember this more. Maybe if I had a graphic and an official challenge it would help me remember haha. Yelling at the kids less, and them contributing positively more can only be a good thing, right?

Way back When-sday

I stumbled across this meme, and I think it's a great idea. I *love* looking through old photos.

Check out twinfatuation blog and join in.

I looked out some old pics of Kaya, which were some of my favs. I used to do a photo shoot of the girls in Calendar Park,Falklirk (Scotland), every fall.

That park has significance for Rene and I. He sort of almost asked me out there (he had a conversation where he hinted at it, because he was too nervous, then started talking about "our relationship" and assumed us to be an item. And we have been ever since). We had our first kiss there (um...later that same day). We had many teenage-frustrated-hormone-driven fights there. We saw Hanson play there.

We took Heather there in fall 2001. And got this photo.

The following year, we were blessed to be able to bring Kaya there.

And also the year after that

But I'm not going to post those pics today (oops, I just did).

Because I loved these ones, from fall 2004. Kaya was 2, and Lana was about 3.5 months. Such pretty wee lassies. This was actually a difficult time in our marriage. We were having issues, and hadn't started counseling yet. We were very much in a rut, and spent a lot of time fighting or crying. But we'd sometimes just get out of the house, just forget about the stresses, the lack of money, the depression, the mess. We'd get out and just be a family. And have fun. And those moments sustained us.

I remember this day. It was a good day.

Check out Daddy's beard. hehe.

I don't miss tons about Scotland, other than the people and some food stuffs. Mostly, our lives have improved so much since coming here that I hardly stop to look back and miss the place. But I must admit, I feel a longing to stroll around Calendar park again, feed the ducks, watch the squirrels. Or in summer, watch the kids on the bouncy castle. A lot of memories in that place.

Finding my homeschooling style

I've encountered a variety of homeschooling styles in the groups I've gone along to. The first homeschooler we came in contact with back in Scotland was highly structured. Her whole house was a library and the walls were covered in educational posters and kids artwork. I felt overwhelmed and didn't know how I'd ever achieve that.

Kaya's typography art. It doesn't say anything in particular.

Then I met the unschoolers. And it appealed to me. It seemed simple and intuitive.

But I am an awkward sort of person. I need some structure in my life, to keep me accountable. I sort of like lists and organization. But at the sniff of over structure I completely rebel. When there are too many rules I start to just want to break them.

So we've been feeling our way through this and I think we're settling into something that works for us. Just the right balance for us.

We employ the unschooling approach for the most part. Which involves learning through play, spending time together, reading, going out and investigating flowers, reading stories, baking together, counting money, etc etc.

But I also take a couple hours between breakfast and lunch to do some structured school work. Even at that it's not very structured. I don't have a set curriculum to work through, I just make up a list of things I want to cover in the year, and we wing it. I have various work books which we make our way through, and it helps keep me accountable. I know we're learning enough to cover the material in the books. If something comes up which I haven't taught yet then I know what our next lesson will be.

Kaya's just finishing up her 1st grade year and Lana rekons she's done with preschool and ready to start kindergarten. She's finished the workbooks for sure, and is reading really quite well for a 4 year old. She reads the same books we get from the library for Kaya!

I think we're finally starting to settle into a routine - no that word smells too much like structure - a pattern that works for us. We have fun learning together. I learn so much too! Homeschooling has its pros and cons for sure, and I'm thinking I'll make a blog post about those at some point. I am just really enjoying getting to spend the day with my kids, from start to end, raising and teaching them and watching them grow and learn. It feels like such an accomplishment. And it's a privilege I am so grateful for.

Having said that...I am totally looking forward to the Summer break when we will take a much more laid back approach! Bring it on Summer. hehe.

When I grow up

Of course, I believe it is my job as a mother, to encourage my children in whatever their endeavors. Whatever career path or life path they choose to follow, I want to be there to encourage them to do their best and serve God through it all.

It is fun though to speculate, based on their personalities, what I can imagine they might choose to do for a living when they reach adulthood. I will do so now.

KAYA

Kaya is made for leadership. Whatever industry she will end up in, she will have to be the boss of it. That's for certain. Maybe she'll start a charity to help feed the hungry and poor (she has a heart for that), or maybe she'll be the president of a major corporation. Or perhaps she'll be a store manager. Whatever she's involved in, she'll be the boss. The leader. The big man.

She has organization skills. She likes to watch and make sure everyone is playing their part to perfection. She has been this way since she was a newborn, she'd hardly sleep because she was busy watching what was going on around her, judging it and making sure everything was going ok according to her plan.

She has the extrovert personality. She's not afraid to be pushy. She is extremely headstrong and determined. She quit sucking her fingers cold turkey at 4 years old when her grandmother offered her a trip to Disney if she's quit. She potty trained at 26 months, and has only ever had maybe 4 accidents ever in her life (and she had an infection at the time). She potty trained in one day. I don't think she's ever wet the bed. She decides something's right and she goes for it. And pity the fool who gets in her way.

LANA

Dear sweet Lana. My partner in crime. She's a peace lovin' tree hugger like her momma. She has a passion for helping the underdog. Lana has a unique perspective on the world. She sees things in ways that most of us could only hope to catch a passing glimpse of. She sees beauty in the ugliness.

She befriends a baby spider, because no one loves it, and she believes it has good intentions. She chooses a toy bat to be her favorite toy, and loves it all the more when it accidentally becomes deformed by being left on top of a lamp and getting melted. She finds one pod in amongst a whole park full of them, which stands out to her from amongst the rest. because it is rounder, or darker, or somehow it just connects with her spirit, and she takes it in and cares for it.

Lana is a story teller. She has imaginary friends galore; I can't keep track of them all. She knows them by name and knows their story and their idiosyncrasies, their families, their loves and hates. They are well developed characters and she is very attached to them. She takes time out to share her food with them, or hold the door open to make sure they all make it back inside before the storm starts.

Lana is fantastic at her school work. She doesn't require a lot of heavily structured learning, yet she's reading and writing and doing great with maths. She picks it up intuitively and without much coaching. She listens to how words sound and tells me how different combination of letters work together and help each other to make new sounds. She even has her own stories about why and how they work that way.

So Lana will be a writer. Not just any old writer. She'll be someone who changes lives with her writing. She'll reduce people to tears, make us see the world in a different light, and make us want to try harder to play our part.

And she'll probably donate all proceeds to a local cat rescue facility (a no kill one) while she stays home with her kids all day. She says she wants to be a mummy when she grows up.

ZOE

If there was such a thing as a Professional Trouble Maker, that's what I'd put her down for. In lieu, I'll choose the next best thing - Zoe's going to be a politician.

She has the determination and leadership skill of Kaya, although slightly toned down. She is ever so slightly more introverted, though next to Lana she still seems like a socializing maniac. She's a fantastic communicator. She's been speaking in clear sentences since before turning 2. She expresses herself more than adequately, in fact very impressively (but I would think so, I'm her mum), through language.

She enjoys the limelight. When she's around a group of people and catches their attention she steals the show and runs with it. She loves to entertain.

She loves to stir up trouble. Getting her hands dirty with things she's not supposed to be touching (like today, I repotted some strawberry plants, then she uprooted them, so I repotted them again...and she uprooted them again...so I repotted them AGAIN!). She loves to go against the advice of other people (like, Zoe don't touch that, it will fall. Or I don't think you should eat that before supper). Such qualities scream politician to me. I think she'd be a good fit for the job.

TURTLE

He makes people feel good. I've never met a person ever in my life who is as content and perfectly happy as this little guy. He never keeps a smile to himself, or holds back joy. He is a sheer delight to be around. And I hear it all the time. Whenever I take him out, I am guaranteed to have a handful of people say to me, "He is such a happy baby!".

He has been soooo easy to look after. Being around him is a privilege. I'm still watching his personality develop, but for now I'm going to guess that he'll be in some sort of position of making people feel good. Maybe a counselor or therapist, maybe a massage therapist or an entertainer. Maybe that teacher who every kid says was their favorite. Whatever he does, I know he'll be touching people as he does it, and his optimism will be rubbing off all around, and he'll help paint the world a more cheerful shade.

I was having a bad day yesterday

Poor Zoe had the pukes and had been up all night, Turtle is teething and the older two were fighting all day. I was feeling really frustrated.

As I was calming down, drinking a beer and cooking a meal, I overheard Kaya consult with her Daddy about a computer game she was playing, where she's a teen girl and she has to keep her well maintained. I heard Rene tell her,

"Your relationships are low, your hygiene is low and your learning is low. You need to get out and talk to people, have a bath and go to school"

I couldn't help but giggle to myself at the accuracy of the statement.

Sometimes I feel like I'm doing everything wrong and everyone hates me and I'm ruining my kids, and I'd be best to just ship them off and have a break. But today has been a better day and I'm loving having them near and watching them grow and learn. I guess I'm growing and learning along the way too.

Budding artist

Zoe loves to draw. The off white walls in the house just look like giant canvases to her.

When you hear a scribbling sound from the other room while you nurse your youngest, you might want to worry a little. When you hear your 2 year old proudly exclaiming, "WOOK! I MADE IT!!!!", you definitely want to worry.

On my way to the livingroom, I saw this wall

and this wall

and this wall

And then I made it to the livingroom.

Of course my first thought was, "where's my camera", and it was funny. It was felt tip pen, it wiped off easily and Kaya was keen to help.

However, when she did the same thing the next day, with crayon, it was not as funny (though she thinks it absolutely was).

Ah well, at least she's got the creative gene. And have I mentioned before that she's left handed? I think I have. I think it's pretty cool. Her dad is lefty as is my dad.

Jokes

My kids love telling jokes. Or at least their versions of them.

I remember years ago when we lived in Scotland, Kaya telling a room full of people, "knock knock"
"who's there?" we replied.
"I stepped on a rainbow!"
And that was it. We all laughed.

In the car the other day Kaya and Lana were telling jokes again. Kaya's starting to get the hang of it now. Here are a couple I can remember:

Q. What do you get when you leave a sick cat out in the cold?
A. A catsickle

Q. What did the tree say when the cat climbed up it?
A. Nothing, it's a tree!

Lana still doesn't quite get it. Her attempt went like this:

"knock knock"
"who's there?"
"kitten"
"kitten who"
"kitten mattin. Mattin means the kitten jumped up on the towel in the bathroom with it's paws!"
And then she erupts into laughter.

She did have one sweet joke though:
Q. What did the heart say to the brain?
A. I love you brain.

How sweet is that?

And Zoe had a go too. She starts yelling from the back seat,
"KNOCK KNOCK!!!!!!!"
"who's there?"
"AH BOO BOO!!!"
"ah boo boo who?"
"BOO BOO BOO BOO!!!!!!!!!!!"

Vomit, testifying and new babies

We're having a very adventure filled day today.

Last night, right after drama class, in the car ride home, Kaya started complaining of an upset tummy. As soon as we got home she went straight to our bed and puked all over it. Glenn had just spent the past 2 days puking up his guts, but he only eats milk so the vomit was easier to clean. Thankfully he didn't dehydrate, he was still happy and alert and is now keeping everything down.

Kaya spent all night puking, and daddy was tending to her. In between tending to her, he was writing his testimony for today's hearing at the State Capitol. We're members of Nebraska Friends Of Midwives, an organization trying to increase access to midwifery in the State. We're trying to put through 3 bills and Rene will be testifying on the 3rd bill, which is one of allowing CNMs to attend homebirths in Nebraska (only Nebraska and Alabama don't allow this!) You can watch him testify live online through this link! He'll be in room 1510. It kicks off at 1.00 but I think he'll be on closer to 3.30-4 ish.

And this morning, at maybe 8.30, we had a bit of a homebirth in our own house. Kaya came rushing through to my bedroom, telling me her rabbits had babies! WHAT? Rene has been trying to tell me they are male and female and I guess I didn't believe him. So there are 3 baby bunnies. I separated the one I think is the male. Jeepers, I hope I'm right. Thankfully we had an extra cage for him.

I'm hoping and praying these babies are going to live. The mother had pulled fur, which I read is a good thing. I've placed a little box with nesting material in there, and I put the scattered babies inside. They were cold. I have a heater in the room. The mother seems protective, she stands over them if we go in the room. There is a blanket covering most of the cage, and I am keeping the kids out of the room, and trying to not go in there much. I've made sure the mom has plenty food and water. I'm trying to read all I can online about what the heck I need to do now.

These little babies are so darn adorable. Oh my gosh. They make these tiny little squeaks. I took a couple quick photos. They're not great quality, but I am trying to just stay out and not bother mommy bunny. She's our nervous bunny anyway, the one who's always been least friendly with people, and more timid. I know she needs space to feel safe. It's how I feel too, when I give birth. I don't want people's hands poking me or my babies, I just want space, peace and quiet, privacy and intimacy. Kind of appropriate that they were born on the day of the hearing.

I'll keep you posted on the progress. I've read a bunch online about the first litter usually all dying :( I hope that doesn't happen.

Kaya-less

Daddy's dropping off Kaya at a friend's for a sleep over just now. She lives just at the bottom of the hill next to our house, about a 2 minute walk away. She tried going for a sleep over to her house a year ago, but she missed us and missed her own house and bedtime routine and wanted to come home. I'm thinking this time she'll stick it out though, she's that wee bit older and more confident.

So I should be enjoying the peace and quiet right? I've often been asked before, "Don't you sometimes just want to be away from your kids for a while?"

My answer is, absolutely not! I'm just not one of those mothers who enjoys time away from my kids. I love being around them. Sure, they drive me crazy sometimes, but I love being near them. I feel kind of lost when they're not around.

So here I am, setting the table for one less, with rather a bit of sadness. I hope she has a blast and I look forward to collecting her again in the morning!

We've got bunnies

I didn't get round to posting this until now, just because it took me so long to get round to getting pics off my camera and uploaded to smugmug

Kaya got 2 bunnies for Christmas! She called then Nick and Neddy. Santa lucked out and got the bunnies, their cages, food, bedding, hay and water dispenser all for free from craigslist. They were waiting by the tree on Christmas morning and Kaya has been thrilled with them!

They're very cute. Cutting their nails is terrifying. They're really calm though and handle it well. We're trying to litter train them, they do most poops in the litter tray but not all.
