Fear Not

Somehow I came across this website today and have been amused and intrigued as I read through it.

It's a list of phobias, and people give small testament to owning the fear and how it affects them. I have a number of irrational fears myself, most of which aren't even listed here (I guess they're too weird!) and one of which I plan to post about here soon. But reading some of these helped me feel a little more normal. The following fears are listed, and particularly tickled me. I'll include a quote from the site for each fear, for your amusement.

fear of ankles
"they really freak me out! I am always sceared that someone could cut them with a knife in a swimming pool""

fear of buttons (seemingly common, and has a name, koumpounophobia)
"If I touch one by mistake, I would wash my hands for about 30 mins.. "

"I also think buttons smell. Even the word button is disgusting."

"If I find a button just lying around I am liable to vomit"

fear of pine trees
"I am scared that the trees will smother me or I will die."

fear of toilets
" I fear a toilet overflowing and I especially fear toilets with a high-level cistern or wall-hung toilets as it has been called. "

fear of people breathing
"i can't stand the sound of it...it just drives me up the wall. i also can't listen to clocks tick. "

fear of going to the mailbox
"sometimes it takes me a couple of weeks to go to the mailbox."

fear of wind blowing clothes off *chuckle*
"i no this is strange but i have a huge fear of walking down the road and the wind all of a sudden blowing my clothes off, i aslo have a fear of a fish getting out of its tank in the middle of the nite and sucking on me till i got no blood left. "

fear of migets read more here
"I know migits are people but they are scary looking."

"Im also afraid of to go in public places because of the fear of midgets, but not just any midgets, bald midgets"

"we have seen a total of 11 midgets since 12/6/03. That's an approximate average of 2.2 midgets per day!!!!"

fear of baked beans
"there is something so contrived about a solitary baked bean....they look like they're really angry about being left alone and look like their plotting how to kill you for doing so. You just can't tell what they are thinking."

"I think that when I am asleep they will make an army and come and kill me. Once, as a cruel joke, someone put a bean in my ear. I just lashed out at them and broke their arm... "

There are so many more on the website.
Check it out.

That is HILARIOUS! There are two irrational fears I subscribe to - fear of stickers and fear of fluff. It makes me feel physically sick to think of either. I think we all have our own little quirks and phobias really - even if they're disguised as habits and routines!

"For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, DO NOT FEAR; I will help you." Isaiah 41:13

"Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. DO NOT FEAR them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good." Jeremiah 10:5

"This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. DO NOT FEAR." Haggai 2:5

"But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. DO NOT FEAR what they fear; do not be frightened." 1 Peter 3:14

"You dear children are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one in the world." 1 John 4:4

What a fascinating website. Amazes me what some people are scared of. I do believe though that some fears are right and natural as they protect us from harm such as fear of heights, spiders etc.. hope that makes sense. *hugs*

I completely agree, Di. It's a survival instinct in many cases. Did you ever see the BBC program Human Instinct? It was that professor who does the Child Of Our Times stuff. It was fascinating. It even mentioned things like, how if there's a poop in a public toilet, that someone didn't flush, people walk in, take one glance, then walk back out. The instinct to avoid harm, infection etc. God knew what he was thinking when he designed us! It's pretty awesome.

And yeah, we all have our quirks and we're all afraid of something. Snakes, spiders, sharks, enclosed spaces, your Auntie Jeanie etc.

Some of mine are, old winding, small stair cases, like in the old Scottish historical buildings. Rene and I used to go across Scotland to visit places, pay to get in, just for me to sit outside the whole time and wait for him to come back out, because I was too scared to go up the stairs.
I'm also scared of butterflies (oh my gosh, I hate them!), elevators, and people (in general). We're all weird. In one way or another.
